The SETC Tax Credit was available for self-employed individuals. It functioned similarly to the paid sick and family leave benefits that were extended to employees under the FFCRA. This credit allowed self-employed individuals to claim up to a certain amount of sick leave or family leave benefits on their taxes.

Since 1099 contractors don’t have sick and paid leave time like full time employees, the government carved out this credit in late 2021. The credit allows for a refund of up to $511 a day for each day you missed work due to Covid sickness or restrictions.

Many accountants and accounting software’s missed this due to the timing. With it being passed in 2021 most people had already filed their 2020 taxes. Accountants didn’t pick it up in 2021 typically due to industry software not being updated in time as well.
